sustainability in the bathroom

Let’s talk about sustainability in the smallest room of our house, the bathroom. Being sustainable in the bathroom isn’t always easy. On average only one in five people recycle their bathroom items. If we count all containers we use over our lifetime, it really adds up, contributing to filling up our landfills and polluting our planet. So even if the bathroom is small, if we all started to recycle whenever we can, will be one small step in the right direction.

Another way to reduce plastic to end up in our landfills, is to circumvent it. Cutting out plastic in our lives can often seem intimidating, pricey and difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. There are increasingly more ways to become less wasteful which are even good for your wallet. A more eco-friendly bathroom doesn’t happen over night, but updating or swapping some of your products to more sustainable versions and being aware of your plastic consumption can go a long way.

Here are some tipps to have a more eco-friendly bathroom:

? Shampoo: You can trade in your traditional plastic-bottle shampoo and conditioner for a more sustainable shampoo and conditioner bar. These bars not only save on plastic packaging but are more concentrated and last longer.

? Cotton swabs: Even though small in size, cotton swabs are very harmful to our oceans because they are incredibly difficult to remove from waste water. You can swap your swabs for bamboo-stemmed cotton buds or reusable nylon alternatives.

? Toothbrush: Instead of buying a plastic toothbrush maybe consider to buy a bamboo toothbrush when it’s time for a new one. Opting for this alternative, means that there is one less plastic toothbrush swimming with the fish or laying in a landfill. Although, the bristles are not biodegradable and need to be disposed of properly, bamboo brushes are still more sustainable than your average toothbrush.

? Razor: Even though most razors have replaceable heads, these heads are made from rubber, plastic and metal, making it hard to correctly recycle them and billions end up in landfills. Next time you run out of blades maybe acquire a plastic-free razor. These are often not only better for your skin, but will also cost less than modern razors.

? Deodorant: Try to ditch aerosol cans or plastic deodorants and opt for a deodorant in sustainable packaging. Switching to a more natural deodorant is great for your armpits and the people around you.

? Shower: Last but not least, don’t forget to shower together. This way you can save a lot of water;)
